THE KIMBERLY-CLARK PROFESSIONAL
GOLDEN SERVICE AWARDS

BACKGROUND:

The Golden Service Awards were created and launched in 1991 by Kimberly-Clark Professional as part of a continuing programme to promote excellence and recognise and reward high service standards in the away-from-home market. The Awards are now known as ‘The Oscars’ of the cleaning and support services industry and are acknowledged internationally as the hallmark of quality and a powerful tool in the promotion of excellence.

The Future. The rate of expansion of the programme over the last few years has been phenomenal with a dramatic increase in the number of entries in 2005 compared to 2004. This growth was reflected in the event needing to leave The Lancaster Suite at The Savoy, the home of the Awards for many years, and move to the prestigious Royal Lancaster Hotel which has the ability to accommodate the increased level of demand for seats last year and also allow for the anticipated expansion in future years.

A Bi-Annual Event. Taking into account this huge rate of growth, together with feedback received from the cleaning industry highlighting the need for more time for entry preparation plus a longer period for winners to enjoy, and benefit from, their success, the decision has been made to make the programme bi-annual. The next event will therefore take place on 2 November 2007 with entry forms available from October this year.

These Awards have set the world standards in cleaning! Because of its success here the programme is now operating in the Netherlands, Belgium and Italy, with plans in place for other European countries to follow in the next few years, setting the scene for a future European ‘Winner of the Winners’ event. The programme is also well established in Australia and New Zealand with the inaugural event for South Africa in 2005. The move to a bi-annual event will bring the UK Awards into line with others around the globe.

Tony Moore, Vice President Kimberly-Clark Professional Europe said, when announcing Kimberly-Clark’s international commitment to the programme:

“Feedback from the cleaning industry associations, contract cleaners and the media has always been 100% supportive of this initiative. Cleaning standards affect us all in our everyday lives – whether we are a hospital patient, a pupil in school, a restaurant customer or simply an employee using a workplace washroom. Employees and members of the public should always be asking questions about cleaning and hygiene. It’s a two way process – we promote standards to business and out of the home premises, the users should ensure that high standards are maintained and complain when they are not.”

Designed to reward top quality cleaning by individuals, in-house cleaning teams and contract cleaning companies, the Awards provide entry categories in most types of business.

All the professional associations support the programme and their recognition is the highest accolade Kimberly-Clark Professional could ask for. The Awards are recognised and extensively supported by Cleaning and Maintenance magazine, The Cleaning and Support Services Association, The British Cleaning Council and The British Institute of Cleaning Science.

Awards criteria
There is an equal chance for small or large organisations to succeed and for old difficult-to-clean buildings to win against modern easy-to-clean buildings. The Awards are won by the quality of cleaning work.

Judging is carried out by the very best independent experts. Initially entry forms are marked by a panel and then a team of site judges travel the whole of the British Isles and Ireland to inspect the short-listed Finalist sites.

Participation in The Kimberly-Clark Professional Golden Service Awards has grown at great speed. In the beginning less than 40 winners, judges, sponsors and press were present at the first year’s lunch, and welcomed 600 in 2004, its fifteenth year, which is a clear indication of the respect and recognition the Awards have earned since their inception.

    Previous winners’ Talk:

    Winner 2003
Best Cleaned Premises by a Contract Cleaning Company – Offices Under 15,000 sqft Sector

Douglas Cooke of Principle Services in North London is a great supporter of The Golden Service Awards. His teams continue to be on a winning streak. Principle has won a category award for five years in succession – first in 2000 with the under 15,000 sq ft offices sector award, then 2001 for same category, in 2002 for Channing school, in 2003 in the offices under 15,000 sq ft category with its Office of Fair Trading contract and in 2004 in Leisure with Shakespeare’s Globe.

After his win in 2003 Douglas said: “It really is great recognition for our teams who work so hard and enthusiastically in what is becoming a regulation led profession. We’ll be back next year (indeed he was!). I recommend the programme to any contractor or in-house team that’s proud of its cleaning standards.”

    Winner 2003
Best Cleaned Premises by a Contract Cleaning Company – Educational Establishment

After her win in 2003 Gillian Pugsley, Branch Manager for MITIE Cleaning (Southern) Ltd said:
“Our Golden Service Award win has highlighted cleaning and hygiene putting it at the top of the agenda, precisely where it should be, which is very rewarding. Parents, pupils, governors and staff are now all taIking about it. I have never had a site where cleaning is discussed as much as it is at the South Downs College. Our success is a three way partnership – the school invests in cleaning and maintenance, the students generally appreciate and respect this initiative and our team works hard to maintain standards.”
MITIE Cleaning (Southern) Ltd won again in 2004 in Educational/Public Buildings Sector with Hampton Court Palace.
Their colleagues in the South West Division won C&M Offices Above 15,000 sqm with Nationwide House, Nationwide Building Society, Swindon.

    Winner 2003
C&M Best Cleaned Premises by a Small Contract Cleaning Company

Mike Clemens of Burke & Clemens reported that the staff at the Mondial House Croydon site were thrilled. Following their win in 2003, he took the Award to show the 15 strong team and at the same time delivered a bottle of champagne to each one of them. Mike said: “The Awards ceremony is one day I will never forget, but sharing the success back at the site with the team was fantastic for all of us. There was a lot of excitement amongst the team – really good memorable moments and our opportunity for rewarding recognition for good teamwork.”
Burke & Clemens were back again in 2004 and achieved Finalist status for their contract at The Institute of Psychiatry.
